Proposed Mandatory Inbound Travel Health Insurance for Visitors to Kenya

You may have seen recent reports regarding a proposed mandatory travel health insurance requirement for visitors entering Kenya.

With the proposed requirement attracting attention, many travellers and businesses are asking what it means in practice, whether additional insurance needs to be purchased and when the requirement will take effect.

At this stage, our advice is simple: do not make any changes to your existing travel or international medical insurance solely in response to these reports.

However, travellers should be aware that the position is still developing, and JW Seagon cannot be held responsible for any refusal of entry at immigration.

What is currently unclear?

While the Government has published an implementation framework, several important details have yet to be confirmed.

These include:

  • Which insurers will be approved to provide the required cover.
  • When the online registration portal will become operational.
  • How the registration and verification process will work in practice.
  • When the requirement will formally commence.

There are also ongoing legal proceedings challenging aspects of the proposed implementation. The Kenya Tourism Federation has highlighted that the Gazetted notice is only the first step in a process involving further requirements before implementation can begin.

This means the position may continue to change as further guidance is issued.

If you already have travel insurance or international medical insurance, it is worth reviewing your existing policy to understand what protection you currently have, particularly if you have travel planned to Kenya.

Importantly, the proposed mandatory requirement should not be confused with the broader benefits that may already be available under an existing travel or international medical policy.

The appropriate cover will ultimately depend on the final requirements set by the relevant authorities.

What happens next?
